The Stelvio Pass is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps at an elevation of 2.757m (9,045ft) above the sea level. And yes, it is a challenge for each driver, even if you consider yourself as an experienced driver.

The Stelvio Pass is located in the north of Italy between Bormio (Italy) and Stilfs (South Tyrol). It’s one of the highest mountain roads of Europe and one of the most scenic drives at least in Europe.

The road over the pass, known as Stilfser Joch in German, is particularly challenging to drive due to the presence of 48 hairpin bends, with the road becoming exceedingly narrow at some points and some very steep inclines. This road is very exciting and sometimes very exposed and unsecured driveway in innumerable twists and turns. It would be really exciting to drive the pass all on your own, but apart from the narrow hairpin bends the biggest challenge in the high season (August) are definitely the hundreds of bikers and cyclists fighting their way up the pass.

When you meet all these guys again at the top of the Passo Dello Stelvio it’s o.k. and you survived it, but I can tell you it’s really quite challenging. I was lucky to drive a car with 320 horsepowers and automatic gear as the average percentage is 7.4%.

This road is usually open from June to September, but it can be closed anytime when the access is not cleared of snow.
